Objective To investigate the prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) among old and middle-aged males in community inhabitants. Methods A cross-sectional randomized study of 2 000 men aged between 40 to 70 years was performed in Shanghai and Zhejiang community. The lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) was investigated by International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). The length, width, height of prostate zone were measured by transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) in each volunteer for calculating the prostate volume (PV). The data were processed by one-way analysis of variance. Results Totally 1,982 cases meeting the study criteria were included in the investigation. The mean age was (57.85±8.33) years old. The mean IPSS and PV were (5.43±3.21) and (29.86±20.32)mL respectively. The prevalence of moderate and severe LUTS was 50.61%(1 003/1 982). The PV was over 20mL in 68.92%(1 366/1 982). The incidence rate of BPH was 29.97%. Of three groups with different ages, the BPH prevalence was 2.03%, 24.89% and 54.18% respectively. It showed a trend of increase with age (P<0.01). The prevalence of BPH was 36.58% in Shanghai community, while 23.42% in Zhejiang area. Conclusion The BPH prevalence was serious among old and middle-aged males in community inhabitants, especially in urban and should be given much more attention. ? 2015, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.
