Aims Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) ranks among major causes of morbidity and mortality, is an alarming global health problem. Endotoxemia and bacterial translocation caused by impaired intes tinal barrier function plays a critical role in alcohol-induced hepatic injury. Probiotics have been suggested to improve intesti nal barrier function and alleviate the liver injury. We used the Bifid Triple Viable Capsules (Pei Fei Kang, PFK) to prove whether it can decrease the liver damage by modulating gut microbiota and intes tinal barrier integrity in a mice model. Methods Mice were fed Lieber-DeCarli diet containing 5% alcohol for 4 weeks and one dose of alcohol was gavaged on Day 29. In the last two week, PFK was supplemented with alcohol in two groups. Control mice were fed isocaloric diet. At the end of the experiment, the mice were sacrificed for analysis. Result Chronic alcohol exposure induced an elevation in endo-toxin, liver steatosis and the injury of intestinal mucosal, while PFK supplementation attenuated these changes. Treatment with PFK significantly improved intestinal barrier function reflected by increased expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins in ileum. Conclusion Our findings indicate that PFK is effective in prevent ing chronic alcohol exposure induced liver injury. Moreover, it is beneficial to modulate the gut microbiota and intestinal integrity.
