BACKGROUND: the study was aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effect of lycopene supplementation in athletes by determining the concentration level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in plasma by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the first time. METHODS: In this study, 14 female athletes were recruited and randomly divided into control and treated group. The treated group was administered with lycopene capsule continuously for 30 days during one period with high intensity of training, while the control group was administered with placebo instead. The plasma levels of MDA before and after the administration were detected by an HPLC method. RESULTS: The lycopene can significantly reduce the rise of MDA level in the treated group when compared to that in control group (4.91 +/- 0.31 vs. 5.78 +/- 0.65 mu mol.L-1, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Lycopene supplementation has antioxidant effect in professional athletes.
